Pateros Ives Landing

Turning an underutilized asset into a tourist attraction and community open space

The City of Pateros owns property adjacent to the City shop and wastewater treatment plant. The property is located on the shore of the Columbia River near its confluence with the Methow River.

The City envisioned transforming this empty property into a park and boat launch, including a paved multi-modal trail, RV and tent accommodations, and various aesthetic features such as a picnic area and historical exhibit to attract day users and campers.

Varela worked with Pateros to make their vision for the park a reality. We started with a master plan for the site and assisted with funding acquisition.

Park amenities include a bathroom/shower facility, and water, wastewater, and power hookup utilities for RVers, truck-bed campers, and tent spaces. An open greenspace and gazebo picnic area provide a serene place for tourists and locals to enjoy. Pavement aspects of the project included an extension of Lakeshore Drive, a return loop around the City property, and a new parking area.

The resulting multi-use recreational area made excellent use of City-owned property that had long sat underutilized. Varela’s engineering work and Pateros’ vision resulted in a beautiful project that the community and visitors alike will enjoy for decades to come.
